NFS Problem

Post by Bill Gunshann » Tue, 29 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I tried bringing up NFS between two NetBSD 1.2 boxes.  When I do a
"showmount -e" it says the file is exported properly but if I try to
mount it all I get is a really long wait and eventually a "NFS Server
not responding" message.  And there appears to be no way to kill the
mount_nfs command at this point either requiring that the machine be
rebooted to clear it.  Is there something beyond the setting in netstart
needed to start NFS??

Make sure the NFS server is running mountd and nfsd.

On the client you should consider using the bg and intr mount options.

You need to have both nfsd and mountd running. Please check that they
are running on your server.
If they are running, can you post the result of "showmount -e <server>"
run on the client, and the command you use to mount ?

As noted in a few of the replies you received, make sure that you are
running both nfsd and mountd.  Be sure to supply nfsd with the '-u'
argument.  If you don't, nfsd will run, but it will effectively be
working without any ears or a mouth, and that's a very annoying feature
to find the hard way.

I want to thank everyone for the help.  It was mountd.  I guess the idea
of a system being secure out of the box threw me.  I was too used to
wide open system that have to have security tightened to be usable rather
than loosened.  I'm liking this more every day.

Thanks again.

1. NFS Problems... "Unknown NFS client"

Hi!

I have just installed Slackware 2.3 and I'm trying to use NFS
with a Sun.

I can mount drives on the Sun, but the Sun can't mount drives on my
Linux box. I have stripped the /etc/exports file to include only:

/usr/local    *.my.domain(ro)

Yet, I receive messages like this in the syslog on the Linux box:

mount[49]: Unknown NFS client 191.214.xxx.yyy tried to access /usr/local

I have DNS working, and I have tried to put the Sun in my /etc/hosts
file to no avail...

Anyone know what could be wrong?!

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
   Fredrik Lindgren
