JAVA support for NetBSD-1.2 i386??

Post by Bill&Virginia Hodge » Sun, 08 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Has anybody found a way to develop JAVA on NetBSD?
I downloaded the JGL executables from Sun for Solarus i86
and they are elf format and would not run.

Thanks,

Bill

A while back I downloaded kaffe which ran Sun's JAVA based JAVA compiler.
the URL for kaffe is http://www.sarc.city.ac.uk/homes/tim/kaffe/

I have no machine to test here, but as far as I know the COMPAT_SVR4
emulation of NetBSD is sufficient to run Sun's JDK, at least the
non-graphics stuff.

Alternativly:

- seek for Kaffe, which is a free virtual machine (be sure to get
  version 0.6.x or greater)

- You could use guavac to compile Java files (and view them using
  Netscape Navigator)

- From time to time on of the Navigator betas is capable of running
the flags '-java class.name', which turns it into a java virtal
  machine.

- You might try the FreeBSD version of the JDK at
  ftp://freefall.freebsd.org/pub/LOCAL_PORTS (or such, easy to
find). You will have to set up COMPAT_FREEBSD and FreeBSD's shared
  libs.

- You might try the Linux version, using COMPAT_LINUX.

- You might get the sources for the JDk from Sun and try to port it
(not easy, but not impossible also).

1. Java NetBeans 3.4 problem with NetBSD 1.6 (i386)

hy there,
i've just installed java 1.3.1sdk with linux-emu and opera6 shows me
now java-applets, netscape 4.80 also... so java goes very well now;
i want now to install netbeans 3.4 on my netbsd 1.6 (i386) pc to
programm java;
after unpacking and editing the ide.cfg (-J-Xmx96m parameter to
-J-Xmx48m) the programm starts with
#./runide.sh -jdkhome /usr/local/j2sdk1.3.1/
but sometimes it hangs during the start, so i the only thing i see is
the netbeans ide 3.4 logo, sometimes it starts but then hangs when i
want create a new file... so i installed j2sdk 1.4.1, same thing...
any suggestions, or did someone know any other good java ide for
unix/linux ?
thanks in advance for your help...

P.S.: i can programm java now with jikes-1.18 on the command line and
with vi, but i want also try some ide's...
