one basic filesys question

one basic filesys question

Post by Maneesh Singha » Tue, 08 Apr 2003 23:43:52

Hi,

        I have one basic ques. may be it is answered in many Unix
internals books, but I dint really found the exact answer.
My question is : why the inode number 1 is not used in the file systems
(Unix file system more specifically). What is the
philosophy/history behind this ?

Thanx in the anticipation of the answer !

Regards.
Maneesh

/*
 * The root inode is the root of the file system.  Inode 0 can't be used for
 * normal purposes and historically bad blocks were linked to inode 1, thus
 * the root inode is 2.  (Inode 1 is no longer used for this purpose, however
 * numerous dump tapes make this assumption, so we are stuck with it).
