clock bug and fixes ?

Post by Robert Herzo » Fri, 27 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hi,
my pc164lx suffers badly from the wandering clock bug.
I found a file on the Digital site
(http://ftp.europe.digital.com/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/Kernels/pub/DEC/Lin...),
named clock-pc164-rh5 whose name suggests a solution might be there. But
there is no indication about how to use this file. Is it a patch (it
does not look like...) or some explanatory text, or what ?
There are also files named alpha-patches-2.0.30-01.gz till 03.gz. Should
I patch my RH 5 with these ?

Idications of current firmware on PC164LX board would be welcome also. I
have a 5.62-1a Alphabios version. Is this "current" ?
Thanks for any help.

no, it is the binary itself. I'm making a clock -A -u -s
on startup and it works fine with my 164LX and Debian.

1. Bug Setting Sys Clock on Halt ... FIX

I haven't been reading this group a lot lately, so this may have been
mentioned ... but since it's an error, it's worth mentioning again.

I currently have RH 7.1 installed on a 164LX machine (AlphaBIOS upgraded
to SRM).  Until recently (fix below) whenever I would boot my machine
the date would be correct except for the year which would be set to
2000.  I tracked down the problem and there are three incorrect files
which must be patched to fix this bug.

First, /etc/sysconfig/clock did not set 'SRM' to true.  Here is the diff:

$ diff /etc/sysconfig/clock.BAK /etc/sysconfig/clock
3a4
 > SRM=true

The second file is /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit  Technically, this file is not
broken and will not cause problems in it's current state, but it is also
not correct.  Here is the diff:

$ diff /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.BAK /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
71a72,73
 >    elif [ "${CLOCKMODE}" = "SRM" ]; then
 >       SRM=true

Third, /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt does not chech for SRM in
/etc/sysconfig/clock and does not use the "--directisa" option when
setting the system clock on shutdown.  Here is the diff:

$ diff /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt.BAK /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt
82a83,84
 >    elif [ "${CLOCKMODE}" = "SRM" ]; then
 >       SRM=true
105a108
 >
108c111
<       CLOCKFLAGS="$CLOCKFLAGS -S";
---
 >       CLOCKFLAGS="$CLOCKFLAGS -S --directisa";

Enjoy,
