X won′t work on a UDB/Multia with SuSE 6.3

Post by Holger Bank » Thu, 09 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Hello,

I habe Installed a complete new SuSE 6.3 System on my DEC Multia. The SuSE
6.1 was pretty unstable so I removed it. But it mostly runs - including X11.

Now, when I type

startx

the X11 Screen comes up with the resolution I configured in XF86Config. I
can move the mouse cursor 10 seconds and then the mouses freezes.

I cant switch back to text console.

A telnet to the system is possible and I can see, that kpanel, kwm etc.
from the KDE Desktop are running. I just can see the X11 grid and the
mouse-pointer.

Iam using the kernel package from SuSE 6.4 with the newer 2.2.14 Version.
There is nothing special. Just the Multia with 64 MB memory...

Please help :)

Bye
Holger

I am running SuSE 6.4 on a Multia. I was not able to get the TGA
server to work properly and the behavior was as you reported. Put
a nice S3 ViRGE in there and you'll be fine. The ViRGE is a much
better card anyway and you'll get more than the 8-bit color
depth of the TGA.

Good luck,

Michael

There is no room for a graphics card. In my Multia is a 3.5" SCSI Harddrive
... I can put a 2.5" IDE into it and switch to ARC Console but I dont have
the t-connector for the pci slot....

If there's no room for the graphics card, how do you run X?
Is it through the net?

If it's through the net, I have yet to successfully run a system that way.
Could you give me any basic pointers?

UDB/Multia has onboard TGA graphics.
And everything else...ethernet,sound,scsi...

Yes, but now he's back to his original problem of the TGA not working
correctly under SuSE 6.4. I had no luck configuring the TGA under
SuSE and when I configured manually I had extreme instability. The
solution is to install a *real* graphics card in the Multia. I recommend
a ViRGE card (they fit...I've tried several brands). If you have a Multia
which has a 3.5" drive, then you are out of luck I'm afraid. Put an IDE
laptop drive underneath the floppy and get the PCI riser card. That's
the only solution I can see to this. That solution has worked for me
(though I have a VX42 model so I already had the PCI riser installed).

Good luck,

-Michael

It is _NOT TRUE_ that there is no room for a graphics card.

I have a Multia in which I have had installed, at different times,
a) An S3V card (S3V 325 chipset), and
b) An S3 968 card.

To be sure, it's a _tight fit_, but that does not mean that the cards
_cannot_ fit in.

1. problem installing Suse 6.3 on Multia

I have a Multia with 88MB RAM, int. 500MB SCSI HD, ext. 3GB SCSI HD
(id=4), Digital SCSI CD-ROM player (id=3)

When I make a boot menu in the ARC console following page 16 of the
manual the installation doesn't start. I ofcourse replaced the word
"Ruffian" with "noname"

I don't know what entries I have to use to make it work. Can anybody
help me please.

I registered with Suse, but haven't had an answer in 3 days and I want
to start using the software.

Thanks,
