mpg123 on new RedHat

Post by Dragos-Anton Manolesc » Wed, 08 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I've recently installed RedHat 6.2 beta on my machine (avanti) and I
am having problems with mpg123:

Quote:>./mpg123 /usr/local/MP3/einleitung.mpg

High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2 and 3.
Version 0.59r (1999/Jun/15). Written and copyrights by Michael Hipp.
Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more!
THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Directory: /usr/local/MP3/
Playing MPEG stream from einleitung.mpg ...
MPEG 1.0 layer III, 128 kbit/s, 44100 Hz stereo
mpg123: Can't rewind stream by 31 bits!
mpg123: Can't rewind stream by 8 bits!
mpg123: Can't rewind stream by 32 bits!
mpg123: Can't rewind stream by 11 bits!

and so on...

There is output from the sound card but it's really crippled.  I've
also tried to recompile the sources, but I get the same results :-(

I haven't had the time to study what's wrong but I would appreciate
any suggestions. It worked just fine on the same hardware with Debian
Slink.

TIA,

-Dragos

I had the same problem, so I sent a note to Michael Hipp.  He said that
mpg123 0.59r is broken for 64-bits, but the CVS version is fixed.  I
compiled that version and it works fine.  0.59q also works.

As far as I can tell, it's a bug in mpg123 0.59r.  0.59q works fine on
RH5.2 and 60, 0.59r gives the same error on 5.2 and 6.0 as well

1. mpg123 sound quality problem with RedHat 7.0

Hi,

I just upgraded to RedHat 7.0 and now have this sound quality problem
with mpg123 (or xmms, etc...) : the sound has occasional glitches every
few seconds or so. I work a lot with sound, so it's a really bad problem
for me, and i'm considering downgrading back to 6.2.

Has anyone else encountered that problem ? I run an old ISA Soundblaster
64, which has always worked perfectly under 6.2.

I also have a Creative CT4810 PCI sound card, which also worked great
under 6.2, and now it says it's NOT SUPPORTED under RH 7.0 ? What a
joke.
