MULTIA 166 and MANDRAKE

Hi fellow Multia owner!

I've not tried Mandrake, but you're not the first person to post here lately
about it.  I am running Red Hat Linux 6.0 on one of my Multia's, but I will be
updating it soon to 6.1, 6.0 is too buggy.  I'm going to try NetBSD in the next
few weeks. I'll keep you updated as I go along.  Let me know if you have any
success with Mandrake.
I've got 3 Multias, one running Linux, one running WinNT4.0 and the third I'm
trying to get OpenVMS to run, but it's taking more time than I thought.

Hi all,
I have this problem with my multia and mandrake and I was hoping someone
here could help. I went through most of the "standard multia stuff" on this
box... firmware, nvram battery.... Mandrake 7 will not boot from srm .. I
have tried booting from the floppy and the CD. I get 9 errors and then I get
"aboot ok: starting kernel". The system then halts. :(

This is my first alpha install.. is this distro just a waste of time? Should
I go xBSD. Help a brother out :)

it seems to be a waste of time, I've installed successfully Red Hat 5
and 6 but Madrake 7 refuses to boot, I think no one tested it on a
Multia.

IMHO the boot kernel (intboot.gz) is not compatible with the Multia
and no other kernel is available.

Think I wasted a week to download the iso image... :(

Agh!  I was beginning to suspect that it was a bad/incompatible kernel
on the install CD, but wasn't absolutely sure.  Whether I tried to
install from a CD, network, boot directly from SRM or ARC console, all
paths led to a frozen system.

Is there any way to compile a working multia-compatible kernel and use
it to replace the bootinst.gz file?  How hard would it be to cross
compile an Alpha kernel from my x86 system?

It'd be a bit of a hassle, but I figure one could then copy the mandrake
CD to disk, replace the bootinst.gz file, and burn the whole thing onto
a new CD (or maybe just do a network install).

Of course, I could just get my hands on RedHat 6.2, but I'm not ready to
throw in the towel just yet...

1. Getting Started - Alpha 166 Multia / FreeBSD

Hi there

I have been browsing this group for a week or so - nice group.

I have myself an Alpha Multia 166, what I need to know is how to get
started on the install for FreeBSD - Alpha.

I have the BSD / Alpha on the Network - Anon FTP Server, with the idea
being to install it via FTP. ( dose that make sense )

I have the Boot images, but I'm stuck at the First Hurdle - the Multia
won't read the boot images to enable me to start the install.

I have tried Fdimage, and rawrite to make the floppies. and I have also
upgraded the firmware on the machine.

Any help would be appreciated.
