timeout on TUR to IDE CDROM using SCSI emulation

I am running  a program which sends test unit ready commands
once every second to the Compaq CRD-8322B IDE CD reader
under Linux 2.2.5 on an XP1000.  The revision level of the firmware
on the CD reader is 1.07.  After my program has been running for
a while, as long as a week in some cases, my program freezes, and
the following messages fill /var/log/messages at a rate of about twice
per second:

Dec  7 08:40:45 alpha35 kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout :
pid 1061066, scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00
00
Dec  7 08:40:45 alpha35 kernel: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 1061066) timed
out - resetting
Dec  7 08:40:45 alpha35 kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 1
channel 0.

I have observed this condition now on 4 separate XP1000
workstations.

I am running the SCSI emulation software for IDE devices.

What am I doing wrong?
