Q: Why does my X-server allocate 175 MB during start up?

I have a question. During startup to a wdm login screen my X-Server
allocate 175 MB. For my tastes a bit to much.

  I use a PWS500au 392 MB Debian 3.0 XFree 4.2.1 Voodoo4 32 MB.

Any ideas was I had done wrong?

1. x-server wont start, WHY???

ok, i have my linux (slackware) up and running for a while now with no
problems at all.
two days ago i logged on and try to run the x server which was running
perfectly till thst moment. guess what? wont go. no reason is apparent
to me.
this is the error message:

XFree86 Version 3.1.2 / X Window System

Configured drivers:

xinit:  Interrupted system call (errno 4):  unexpected signal 2

waiting for X server to shut down
Fatal server error:
