Upper limit of memory capacity of UP2000

Upper limit of memory capacity of UP2000

Post by Hugh » Sun, 05 Nov 2000 09:58:41

According to the specification page of the API web site,
the upper limit of the memory capacity of the UP2000
board is just 2GB.  The UP2000 has eight slots.
Nowadays, we can find 512MB DIMMs in the market.
Will UP2000 detect and use more than 2GB of
total memory without trouble?

Also, the web page says that the upper limit in the
case of UP1100/1000 is 700+ MB only.
That is too small.

Do they use the same type of memory modules?
I wish to take the memory out from UP2000 and
to put them in a new UP1100.

Thanks.

Hugh

Hi,
2GB is maxmem on UP2000 and UP2000+, 768MB is maxmem on UP1x00,
because the Chipsets cant see 256MBit-Chips on the memorymodules,
only until 128MBit, UP2000 uses registered ECC-RAM, UP1x00 uses
non-registered ECC-RAM, but registered SHOULD run too on them, well,
you have to try this point.

Regards, Mike.

Unfortunately it doesn't have enough address lines to use 512 MB
DIMMs. I believe that the UP2000+ has the same limitation.

But that's the limit -- 3 DIMM slots, same address limit.

Rather unfortunate for a chip whose main strength is large memories.

Hi Greg,
I agree with you that 768MB for the UP1x00 is really too small. Even
2GB for the UP2000 (and UP2000+) isnt really heavy ...

Btw: do you know maxmem of the Compaq XP1000? Is it 2GB or more?

Regards from Freiburg, Mike.

If I recall correctly, it's only 4 slots, but may be 4 GB if you use
(expensive) 1 GB dimms, which do exist.

But does the XP1000 support the 1GB modules? The same problem with the
amount of datawires ...
Mike.

I don't know. It's the kind of thing where you can't always trust the
datasheets. The LX164 took bigger SIMMs than the datasheet claimed.
