I have an alpha xl 300 on which I am trying to install linux. I have
tried MILO built from the 2.2.18 kernel, 2.2.17 kernel, and the
2.0.XXc7 kernel.
The 2.2.X versions lock up after printing a message similar to
"Swapping PALcode at 0xB0000". Then the machine hangs.
The 2.0.x version does boot MILO. The problem with that is at the
MILO prompt I type "boot fd0:" and get "boot: " then type "linux" I
get all kinds of ext2 CRC read errors. Then it asks me to press any
key to reboot.
I have tried creating the floppy images from different drives and have
swapped the drive on the alpha machine. None of which worked.
The box does not have a cdrom drive in it so I was trying to boot the
generic floppy, then the ramdisk floppy, then the network floppy.
I read somewhere that the reason the 2.2.X versions of MILO hang is
due to the video card. It is a Matrox card. I'm not sure about the
specific version. I could find out if someone needed to know.
Thank you for taking the time to read this posting. Any help would be
MUCH appreciated.
