Compiling kernel in RH5.0 alpha

Compiling kernel in RH5.0 alpha

Post by RHS Linux Us » Tue, 10 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Hi everyone,

I am trying to compile the kernel in an UDB alpha but I am getting
these kind of errors all along and I don't seem to get a successfull
compilation:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.0.30/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
 -g -O2 -pipe -mno-fp-regs  -c -o init/main.o init/main.c
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:986: Error: unknown opcode `'
{standard input}:987: Error: Rest of line ignored. First ignored character
 valued 0x0.
{standard input}:2895: Error: unknown opcode `'
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1

The assembler errors are random. Sometimes the lines where the error
is encounter changes.

Any help will be appreciated...

Thank you,
Miguel

Well...I just rebuilt my 2.0.30 kernel on RH5.0 twice last night
on a homebuilt pci33 box and it went without a hitch. I watched
it while I was expecting errors with all of the bad things I've
heard about RH5.0. So far the only problem I've encountered is
a segfault in passwd.

In my experience, most random, unreproducible errors like this are
hardware: bad memory, too hot, noisy power, dirty contacts, something.

Hi

Try the following.

#ifdef REALLY_NEWBIE
  Delete the whole linux source tree.
  reinstall the header rpm and the source rpm
#endif

edit the Makefile and UNCOMMEMT 'SMP=1' with a # when it is not done already.
make the following link;

ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/asm-alpha /usr/src/linux/include/asm

BTW It is more fun to install a 2.1.xx kernel
    2.1.64 gave me no problems to install with 2.1.88 I had to hack in the
    code some places, I guess 2.1.89 should be ok.

1. RH5 Intel vs. RH5 Alpha?

Is there any difference between the manual provided by Redhat with RH5 for
intel and the manual provided by Redhat with RH5 for Alpha?
I have the official intel version but want to save money this time around and
buy a the "un"-official alpha version.

Thanks for your help,
