installing new hdd: partition extends past end of unit

Post by Eduardo Sanche » Mon, 10 Feb 2003 23:33:34

Hi,

I'm installing a new Seagate ST360021A 60GB hdd into my server for more
space.  I'm running into some issues where I get an error message:

"disklabel: partition a: partition extends past end of unit"

There's got to be an easy fix to this, however, I can't see what I'm
doing wrong.  :(

I've read the FAQ on www.openbsd.org and I've scoured the fdisk &
disklabel for clues ...I remain clueless.  ;)

This seems like a common newbie issue, given Marc's entry on 02/08/2002.

At any rate, I've included my dmesg, fdisk wd3 and disklabel wd3
responses at the bottom of this.

Thanks to anyone with the patience to help me.  :D

1. disklabel: partition c: partition extends past end of unit

Hello,

I am currently running OpenBSD 3.2/i386 on a Quantum Fireball 3.2
GB IDE HD. The problem I am seeing is that I would like to change my
partitioning using disklabel -R -r wd0 /tmp/disklabel.wd0 but somehow it
doesn't change anything, I am doing that as root no worry. I think this
is because of a strange error which appears in my disklabel output as
you can see here:

% sudo disklabel wd0

# using MBR partition 3: type A6 off 63 (0x3f) size 6297921 (0x601941)
# /dev/rwd0c:
type: ESDI

sectors/track: 63

sectors/cylinder: 8064
cylinders: 781
total sectors: 6305985
rpm: 3600
interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0           # microseconds
track-to-track seek: 0  # microseconds
drivedata: 0

8 partitions:
#        size   offset    fstype   [fsize bsize   cpg]
  a:  1225665       63    4.2BSD     1024  8192    16   # (Cyl.    0*-

  b:   129024  1225728      swap                        # (Cyl.  152 -

disklabel: partition c: partition extends past end of unit

see that last message: disklabel: partition c: partition extends past
end of unit ?? What's wrong ?? How can I fix that ? I really need to add
new partitions to my disk...

Many thanks for the help
