For a k-6 I love my Tyan trinity 100AT.  It's been very stable but it
doesn't overclock worth anything.  If you have an older AT style case
though its hard to get anything else with 4/4/1 ISA/PCI/AGP2x.  It also
supports asyncronous memory speeds (I had 60ns FPM RAM in there with a
k-6/2 400.)  I think the config is 2 SIMM/3DIMM slots.

I've had OpenBSD running without motherboard related problems
on Celeron based computers with Asus P2L97 and P3B-F motherboards
(these need an adapter for use with recent socket 370 Celeron
processors).  The Asus MEW motherboard with built in network
interface works (network interface uses fxp driver), but sometimes
has case / motherboard alignment problems which prevent the network
cable from clicking in properly.

Forgot to mention that the Asus MEW's Intel 810 built in video
is not supported by XFree86 on non-Linux computers (not a problem
when I was using OpenBSD on it, since that computer did not
use X on the console).

thanks! that procomp board is horrible! (its a bvc3a) hangs on the
hardware detect on almost all OSes (except win98) and of course,
freebsds pre config can get around it. and then it gets so finicky
about when it *feels* like booting...

had to rant...

1. motherboard recs?

i have heard that ASUS motherboards need very high quality memory.
i have two, and i've had difficulties with memory in both.

i'm wondering if there are motherboards that don't have this
"weakness"--weakness  in quotes because i'm not sure it's
right to call it that.

welll, nevermind that anyway--the point may be moot.

i have an ancient 166 MHz board, and i'm growing impatient waiting
for it to boot.  the machine only acts as a print server, so it's
fast enough once it's up.  so here are the questions:

1.  i have some memory lying around, PC2100.  i don't need speed
to run the printer.  i'm just impatient at boot time.  is there
an el-cheapo board i can use with my PC2100 memory?

2.  what moderately priced board would you recommend, assuming you
just needed a decent, moderate performance box?  i seem to be hearing
good things about supermicro.  round numbers, those look to start
in the vicinity of $250 w/ cpu, and i'm not sure i could re-use my memory.
i'm just thinking, if the answer to question 1 turns out to be
not too far from the answer this question, maybe i should just give
up my old memory.

my only constraint is ATX form factor.
