Complete newbie - can't even install

Post by Kenneth Harringto » Mon, 18 Sep 2000 04:00:00

I'm completely new to openbsd.  I have been using Linux, and wanted to
see what this is all about.  I have a CD from Cheapbytes with openbsd.

When I tried to install to a disk that has Linux, and has a partition
reserved for obsd, I get a bunch of warnings about partitions not being
on LBA boundaries.  I didn't know if these were fatal, so I tried to
continue.  It then talks about "labeling" the disk, and asks if I want
to install to wd0 or wd1.  I don't know how the partitions are labeled
in bsd, so I didn't get much farther.  I think I actually tried each of
these in turn, but it didn't work.

So I guess my questions are whether there might be a problem installing
to a disk which was partitioned with the Linux fdisk, and what the
partition labels wd0 and wd1 mean.  While I'm at it, can I share a swap
partition with Linux?

I'm sure I'll come across a bunch of other things I don't know.  Is
there a good newbie site with this kind of information?  or a good book
someone could recommend?

Thanks

Doh!  that makes sense.  Sorry, it was late at night, etc., etc.
Got it installed, and starting to learn...

1. installing 'collect', 'analyze' tools without complete Compiler set

In a customer system running on Solaris, I would like to use the tools
like 'collect', 'analyze' etc. for profiling reasons. As I am aware,
these tools are delivered as part of SUN Compilers. But,
unfortunately, I cannot install the complete C++ compiler set on a
Customer system, just for the purpose of using the profiling tools.
Could anybody suggest a way of getting only such specific tools on the
Customer system? Are there specific packages containing only these
tools?
