How to install KDE or GNOME in OpenBSD 3.1 ?

Post by Arctic Wol » Wed, 29 May 2002 12:44:34

In a pristine installation of OpenBSD 3.1, I copied ports.tar.gz into
the /usr directory and ran "tar zxf ports.tar.gz", then issued the
command "cd /usr/ports/x11/kde", and then issued "make".  It ran for
quite some time, then stopped with errors.
Issuing the "make" command from within /usr/ports/x11/gnome also gave me
some errors after running for some time.
What are the correct steps in building/installing KDE/GNOME in a fresh
install of OpenBSD 3.1?
By the way, I'm able to run X, though.
Thanks.

The packages at ftp.openbsd.org are probably fresh as your OpenBSD 3.1
because it's a new release... 2 weeks .. or three. If you're not
obliged to install via ports, fetch the packages on the ftp
and install it with the pkg_add(1) command.

setenv PKG_PATH ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/3.1/packages/your_arch/
sudo pkg_add {$PKG_PATH}pkg_name

1. KDE 3.1 and Shift-Ins

I apologize in advance for the basic question.

I've recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.1 (KDE 3.1) from previous
releases of both.  Historically, I have been able to paste text (which
has been previously highlighted with mouse) via the Shift-Ins key
combination.  This has worked across Konsole windows, vim, etc...
However, as of this upgrade, the Shift-Ins key combination does not
seem to paste?

I notice that the middle mouse button does still work, but my fingers
have grown quite acustomed to the Shift-Ins combination so that they
do not have to leave the keyboard.  Can anyone point me in the right
direction to re-enable this feature and/or what has changed?

Thanks again.
