obsd install problem

Post by Shumin W » Thu, 10 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I'm trying to install OpenBSD on a pentium machine with 64M ram and a 1
gig HD. The installation actually went fine, but it won't boot after
install. The console prints out:

Using driver 0:Partition 3   (which seems correct)

and then just does nothing. I examined the partitions and all the files
seem to be there: wd0a has the root partition, obsd is installed on
bootable partition 3.

I tried booting using the install floppy with "boot hd0a:/bsd" and that
seem to work (although it hangs after initializing the second of 2
ethernet cards. That may be a problem all by itself. I did use that
second card to perform ftp install, btw.)

I'm new to OpenBSD, so any help would be greatly appreciated .

I had a hard time with my first install (last week)
Setting up the partition(s) and running disklabel are explained nicely here:
http://www.openbsd.com/faq/faq14.html

ive had this problem, but i dont know what is really going on.
but since no one else is helping you,
when you partition in the install, try using the entire disk, or
use a boot loader theres one on the cd, and you can get grub
from gnu or lilo with a small linux partition. ive only
done it with lilo. the linux partition can them serve as
something to mount under /emul/linux

try to type "boot wd0a:/bsd" at the "boot:" prompt when booting. It worked
for me. Also try to experiment with the letters(slice), Is that the right
word in BSD. Sorry I'm only a n3wb. I hope that helps.

Thanks for everyone's help. I thought I've read something about the problem
when I initially went thru the faq, but oh well. I ended up having to
install a boot loader. The default kernel didn't boot until after I pulled
out the ne2k ethernet card (strange: it boots fine with the kernel on the
floppy. Heck, I ftp installed with that card.), but I bet I can probably get
that fixed with a custom compiled kernel later.

Again, thanks for everyone's help.

Well, after reading the Kernel config faq and disabling a bunch of sound card
probes (that were probing the same io address as the ethernet card), I got the
kernel to boot with everything I had. Pretty cool config utility I must say
(easier than configuring those linux modules, it seems.)

1. OBSD 3.0 Install Problem

Hi,

I have a problem with installing OBSD 3.0 as the install kernel won't
boot on my machine.

My machine's vitals.  P3-550, Promise Ultra66 PCI (PDC20262), Adaptec
2930CU, 256MB RAM.

I have had no trouble with the previous releases 2.7, 2.8, 2.9 as the
installs for these went without a hitch.

The problem seems to be with the Promise Card as the boot hangs there
with the screen scrolling the following message:

pciide 1:1:bogus intr (reg0x1135120) <----(have to hard boot machine
at this point)

When the machine boots normally it assigns pciide(1:0:0) to the first
HDD, pciide(1:1:0) to the 2nd HDD on the Promise controller.

Is there a way to assign these addresses at the boot prompt with UKC or
otherwise?

Thanks for any help.
