It uses X11R6 and fvwm by default.  You can install and
use any window manager you want assuming it will compile.

Which leads me to my problem, compiling the Qt library on 2.5/sparc

I downloaded and began compiling Qt-1.44.  It got part way through the
compile and then got an "internal compiler error" on one of the .cpp
files.  So, I figure gcc/g++ 2.8.1 isn't so current and could use
and upgrade.  I compiled and installed the egcs 2.95.2 package.

I then restarted (make clean; make) my Qt-1.44 compile.  It ran
for about 2.5 hours (my little SparcLX ain't so fast) and then
bombed out again.  The make had just finished the 'tsort' actions
and then tried to link something, but failed with a "reloc" error
in /usr/lib/libc++rt0.o

I tried switching back to g++ 2.8.1 with no luck, same error.

I dislike gnome and would love to use KDE, but the package is basically
useless without the Qt lib(s) and the KDE ./configure fails without them.

Any help would be great and I'll make compiled binaries available to all
who desire them.

I'm not sure what the default is. You can get OpenBSD binaries ( for
OpenBSD 2.5, i386 ) at ftp.kde.org. So yes, you can run KDE and you
don't even need to compile anything to do it.

it appears that someone has done this for openbsd.

1. (newbie) makefile question (newbie)

^^^^^^^^^^ this should be a single <TAB> character.
You probably have a 8 or 9 <SPACE> characters in there ...

Also note that libraries should follow objects on command
line, not preceed them; so a better link line would be:

<TAB>cc prodcons.o -lpthread

Also, the result of your link will be 'a.out', not 'prodcons'
(as your makefile implies), so correct link line is:
