"boot failed" in first boot after installation

Post by antho » Fri, 18 Jan 2002 19:25:06

i have a problem with my newly installed RH7.2.
during the installation, i chose to boot up linux with a boot floppy and did
not install any boot loader. however, after the installation finished and the
machine restarted, the respone was some kinda of message "SYSLINUX...boot
failed". i suspected that the floppy i used to creat the boot disk was not
working properly......kindly please help advise what i should do to boot into
linux and creat another boot disk??

i've tried to make another disk with boot.img and RAWRITE from RH FTP site but
the disk created seems to help with boot up machine for installation only...

thanks very much in advance for any help.

cheers

Try using that disk, and on the prompt put in "linux root=/dev/blah"
(replacing blah with whatever hard disk partition you installed as / -
maybe hda1). That _should_ boot up your installed system, having loaded
the kernel from the floppy. You can then try making another boot disk.

1. Newbie "Boot" or not to "Boot"

I have version 4.0, I have installed and re-installed, many times and still
cannot boot. I originally used dos fdisk to create a 2gig partition for
windows, formatted and installed win98. The rest of the disk was for
FreeBSD. After reading all the information I could, I discovered that the
autodetect in the bios was using CHS mode for the disk (8.4gig seagate), I
changed to lba mode. I then installed bsd again and changed the disk
geometry to coincide with the lba mapping, This caused the partition utility
in the install to report that the bsd started and ended before the 1024 cyl.

When using 'boot mgr' (boot easy) F1 for dos F2 for bsd, I could not select
F2, using XOSL boot mgr, the message is "read error", using fbsdboot.exe
from a dos boot disk reports wrong disklabel can't find /kernel.
Question #1: Can anyone help?
Question #2: Do I need to repartition when changing from CHS to LBA?
