Install error: error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic

I already installed RedHat8 on my pc once, and everything went fine.
When I succesfully installed it, my hard disk was partitioned as follow:
4000 Mb   FAT32  (for win2k)
110 MB    ext3   linux boot
14711 Mb  ext3   main linux partition
256  Mb   swap   linux swap partition

However, I realized I didn't have all the time required to learn an
operating system like Linux, so I decided to use win2k as a primary
operating system and linux as secondary. I formatted the whole hard
drive, and installed win2k on ntfs partitions. Then I tried to reinstall
linux again, but I couldn't.
My hard disk is now partitioned as follows:

1513  Mb   NTFS
13790 Mb  NTFS
109   Mb  FAT32
604   Mb  NTFS
109   Mb  ext3
2690  Mb  ext3
256   Mb  linux swap

After I boot my pc from the first bootable red hat cdrom and skip the
media test (I had already checked the cds and they're all fine), I wait
a very long time and then get the error message:

error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic

repeated three times.
What does it mean? Is there soemthing wrong with the hard disk? Maybe I
have too many partitions?
