Redhat 8.0 X Problem on Dell Optiplex GX110

Redhat 8.0 X Problem on Dell Optiplex GX110

Post by Raghur » Mon, 02 Dec 2002 01:40:05

Hi,

I installed Redhat 8.0 (intsalled everything) on my Dell Optiplex GX
110. During install, I selected defaults for X configuration. When I
do "startx", it quits with the message "No Screens". I am attaching
/var/log/XFree86.0.log even though it makes the posting a bit long. I
also tried to configure X again but could not find the program
"Xconfigurator". Is it changed in 8.0 to another name? How does one
configure X from command prompt and not part of installation?

Thanks in advance,
Raghu

Yep, it's another name in 8.0 -- use "redhat-config-xfree86" instead of
"Xconfigurator".  (This is mentioned in the 'RELEASE-NOTES' file on the first
installation disc, btw. ;-)

From your XFree86.0.log file, it looks like you've got the onboard i810 video
enabled *and* an NVidia Riva TNT2 card installed -- does that sound like your
setup?  If I'm reading the log right (which is a *big* "if" :-), XFree86 is
loading the i810 driver, but trying to use it with the NVidia card.  If
redhat-config-xfree86 can't get things straight and if you're not shooting
for a dual-monitor system, you might want to disable/remove the unused
graphics chip/card and give it another shot.

Redhat 8.0 X Problem on Dell Optiplex GX110

Post by Raghur » Tue, 03 Dec 2002 12:00:44

Hi,

I tried the following command:

#redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig --set-driver=nv --set-videoram=0

"nv" for NVIDIA card. It loaded the correct driver and X came up
successfully. Thanks a lot for the help.

Raghuram.
