user login error

Post by Michael Lehikoine » Sat, 26 Aug 2000 04:00:00

after installing, have created 3 user accounts using linuxconf and two
of them right
off the first login is displaying the error message:  " [: too many
arguments ", and
the 3rd one is not displaying any problems.  The root and first user
account created
during install is fine and not displaying any problems at all.

Have tried comparing the .bashrc and .screenrc files in each user's home
directory,
but all appear to be the same.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you use useradd to create the accounts made after the install?

I use 'useradd <username>' .  Then 'passwd <username>'

If you haven't put anything in the user's home directory yet, you could try
'userdel <username>' and then the above command to see if it will put it
right.  I don't know what linuxconf might have done.

Thanks Anita, this indeed made a difference, as after deleting the account and
recreating it, the error did stop although I don't know why this made a
difference.
Thanks again,
Mike

My experience has been that linuxconf is a very funny animal.  I avoid it,
but it could be just that I don't really know how to use it.  I'll have to
try it sometime for creating an account to see what the options are.  Glad
it worked.
