Post your smb.conf file for starts and we can look at it and tell you
what's wrong.  also how do you want to share? A free share for all to
write to and delete? Read only? Or do you want it to map to the users
home directory? they're all pretty easy.  Easy to say since it took me
the better part of a week to figure it out.

I had the same problem, but found that I had the wrong DNS IP in all
the client machines, after I fixed that everything worked ok. If you
get an IPC$ log in, you need to creat a user on the linux box that is
equal to the login on the 98 machine, including network passwords. I
can post my smb.cfg also to compare.

Brad,
Unfortunately I left all my notes and books at work so I'll have to
look at this on Monday.  I sent myself a note to remind me.  I'll get
back to you monday. from what I do see it does look correct from what
I remember.  Did you use smbpasswd to set your password on the linux
box? You will also may want to try setting your security to share
rather then user.  When I set mine up I opened everything up and then
slowly closed things down until it got as tight as I needed.

That's normal disk sharing operation.  You get the exact same file as is
on the other system.  It would be no different than copying that file to
a floppy and moving it that way.  If you want text conversion, use ftp.
Also, I recall some utilitie from a few years ago that handled the
conversion.  They had names like unix2dos and dos2unix, which would
convert a text file between the two formats.

I don't think this is really quirk with Samba.  Windows likes to add
a carriage return and a linefeed for every newline.  There are many
ways to convert files (dos2unix, etc) but I think it's safe to assume
that Samba is preserving the content of the files it transfers.

1. WIN98SE to RH7.1

Hi All,

        As with most messages I'm new to the Linux world.
I am having difficulty networking my linux box to my windows
machine.

I have a Home network with 3 machines two win98 se
and the other is RH7.1. For now I'm just trying to link linux to one
windows machine.

I have set samba.conf with the min requirements to get it going:-

workgroup = MIDC                (Same as all the machines)
hosts allow = 192.168.0. 127
security = share

[windows]               (my share name)
path = /home
public = yes
only guest = yes
writable = yes
printable = no

I can ping both machines without a problem.

When I run smbclient -L localhost my shares appear.
My /etc/hosts file has all the names and ip numbers listed.

When I try and mount the win98 shared folder in linux I rcv
a message that staes the session failed. Network neighborhood
fails to see the linux machine, even under a search. My lights flash
on my network card on the linux box, but thats about it.

I have also changed the registry setting in 98 re encrypted passwords,
however my smb.conf file states security = share not user.

I'm at a loss to try and get it working.. any help would be greatly
appriciated.
Cheers
