sawfish doesn't work after change UID

Post by Stephane Hun » Tue, 01 May 2001 16:18:49

I have an account on redhat 7.1, it works fine, but I want to chage the
UID to be the same as my account on NFS server so I don't have to setup
any special UID mapping file (I don't want to use NIS either... too
complicated for my simple environment).

Ok, so I changed UID, and recursively update owner of every files in my
home directory.  I even changed the owner of /tmp/orbit-* directory (do
I need to do this?) and re-login into gnome/sawfish environment.
Everything seems to work fine except one thing: when I open sawfish
window manager in control center, it says "sawfish is not currently
running" and doesn't allow me to setup anything.  Sawfish is definitely
running in my environment.

The problem goes away if I change my UID back.... does sawfish keep any
user related config file other then user's home directory?

Have you checked the ownership of your $HOME/.sawfish directory and the
files under it?  If that ownership is incorrect, your  window manager
will sleep with the fishes....Also, when checking .sawfish, check
.gnome and .gnome-desktop as well.

1. login doesn't change my UID? Sucks...

1.3.87, nothing weird.  Got the recommended libc, ld.so, etc, etc.  I
quickly got tired of su'ing to do a major installation, because /some/
programs look at the real uid, and /some/ look at the effective uid.
So I would get certain permission-related problems whilst su'ed to
root, but not after logging in directly as root.

So.  I decided to install something.  I pull up an xterm.  I try to log
in as root (half expecting a "root login not permitted" message).  Note
that right now, my motd is just "Hi" since nobody else is using the
machine.

      [fenric]> whoami
      pedwards
      [fenric]> login root
      Password:

              Hi.

      [fenric]> whoami
      pedwards
      [fenric]> exec login

      fenric login: root
      Password:

              Hi.

      [fenric]> whoami
      pedwards
      [fenric]>

The motd is printed, clearly indicating a successful password
check, etc.  But nothing is done.

Anyone??

Luck++;
