RH71, MySQL 3.23.39

I've installed MySQL via rpm, but when I go to run it (mysql), I get

"ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock ' (2)"

Suggestions?

Make sure that the user mysql (or mysqladm or whtaever yours is called)
is the owner of the directory /var/lib/mysql and can write to it - use
chown and/or chmod.
