updating RPM packages with new nonRPM-packages

updating RPM packages with new nonRPM-packages

Post by Sergio Andreozz » Sun, 04 Mar 2001 01:43:09

I need install on my redhat 7.0 the ns2 (network simulator
http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-build.html). I would like to install in
getting the pieces I need.
This software needs several packages (ex. tcl/tk 8.3.2, otcl).

I have some of this package in my redhat distr (ex. tcl/tk), but the version
shown by GnomeRPM is 8.2(?). Checking the /usr dierctorie I find tcl-8.3.

Questions:
1. the information shown by GnomeRPM is wrong?
2. how can I update the tcl/tk package without having an RPM distribution
(it's enough decompress, make, make install)?
3.about the other packeges (ex. otcl),  could you give me suggestion (ex. is
better decompress them in a tmp subfolder and then give the make command or
put them in the final directorie and give the make command)?

I excuse for the not so clear questions, but I don't have a long experience
in the linux world.

Thanks to all who want to help me

Sergio

Maybe not.
Try the command "rpm -q tcl".

You can compile the source from the tarball.  That will not update
the rpm database though.  You can look on rpmfind.net for tcl and tk
 packages that you need.

Better to use a tmp folder.  By personal preference, some
 use /tmp, or /usr/src, or /root/src.

1. RPM Crashes with "//var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm not found"

I am running FreeBSD 3.4 with linux binary capability installed (linux
base 6.1).  I know that the linux capability works because I have
WordPerfect  8 running.  I am trying to install an rpm but when I run it
through RPM 2.5.6 I get this error:
failed to open //var//lib/rpm/packages.rpm

I do not understand this, as I installed the RPM through the FreeBSD
ports collection.
Any help would be appreciated.
