linux can't find pcmcia modem ??

Post by dan sawye » Mon, 06 May 2002 00:02:30

All,

The system is a laptop running redhat 7.2. There is a pcmcia
modem installed. Neither the modem config program or dip can
find the modem.

Does Linux capture the 'real' or allocated pcmcia ports
anywhere?

How is the pcmcia port/irq allocation made? Is it grabbed by
the device? Is it allocated by the system? If so where is
that controled? i.e. BIOS, S/W ???

Is there a way to direct the configuration to a
predetermined configuration?

Thanks,
Dan

I've got the same problem Dan.  IBM 560X laptop with Xircom CEM56 PCMCIA
card that can connect to either a network or modem.  Card seems to be
installed o.k. as it shows up under Hardware Browser in KDE 2.2, but I
can't do anything with it.  There's definitely more configuring that needs
to be done, but I just can't find it, and I've already spent hours on the
MAN's and HOWTO's.

Hope you have better luck.  I'll post here if I find anything.

1. linux can't find pcmcia modem on a laptop

All,

The system is a laptop running RH 7.2 with a pcmcia modem.

First the dialup configuration script doesn't find the modem

Second the modem shows up in /proc/tty/driver/serial as 4:
Is this /dev/ttyS4?? (it appears to be)

Finally in order to 'see' if the modem is there I tried
dip -t / port /dev/ttyS4  / term. This activates dtr and rts
but does not appear to send any data.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
