almost complete newbie tries to install xfree86 4.1.0 and...

...and now when Linux is done loading, I'm stuck with a (xterm?)
console.

If I type 'startkde' in this console, my KDE graphical login appears
(and I can start KDE), but everything has a a greenish (xfee?)
titlebar above it (even the desktop, panel, etc.).

I think I screwed up at the xfree-install, answering 'yes' to all
questions regarding overwriting config-files. So I went to my RH7.1 CD
and I found a rpm called 'xinitrc-3.6-1.noarch.rpm' filled with
config-files. I tried to install it with 'rpm -i -vv --force
xinitrc-3.6-1.noarch.rpm' but I think it didn't work (lots of 'skip'
in the output). For example, my xinitrc still says '# $Xorg:
xinitrc.cpp,v 1.3 2000/08/17 19:54:30 cpqbld Exp $' so I suppose
that's not the right (original RH) one.

1. Am I right thinking it's my config-files, especially the ones
concerning starting xfree?
2. Which config-files should be replaced by the original (RH7.1) ones?
3. How can I get them? Can I manually extract them from a rpm?

extra: Am I in the right direction?

Note: The biggest screw-up I did was backing up the X11R6 directory,
but not the X11 directory, so I don't have the old files anymore. If
not, I would simply 'roll-back' and start over.

Update:
I found a set of scripts named RPM-tools. It contains one called
rpm-get which lets you extract files from RPMs, so Istarted extracting
config-files from the original RedHat rpms. After replacing a few (and
changinga few file-permissions!!!) the whole startup got back to
normal.

Now the only thing that isn't working right, are the fonts. I only
have a few fonts available in KDE and especially 'Konsole' looks
horribly (maybe it's because I only have 1 fixed-width font available
now?).

What I know:
- I've got xfs running
- /etc/X11/fs/config contains paths to all font-directories of the
original RH file and 3 more from the original XFree file.
- During the XFree-setup all fonts.dir were automatically re-created
- Available fonts are: fixed (only fixed-width font), Bitstream
Charter, Courier, Courier 10 Pitch, Cursor, Lucidux Mono/Sans/Serif,
Utopia. Only 9!

So what's wrong?

Please, I've been struggeling with this for three days now. I finally
have anti-aliased fonts and I may even get my Wacom Graphire USB mouse
working with XFree 4.1.0, but I have to get this last thing right..

1. newbie trying to install XFree86 4

Hi there, I just installed kde with XFree86 3.36 - it was all great
till I decided to upgrade xfree86 to version 4. I downloaded the
package, said pkg_add, but now startx does not work! :-( It took me
great effort to make it work and now... It said I needed to run xdm,
but just typing xdm gives me nothing. As an alternative suggestion was
to install some x11/wrapper, but I couldn't find it on ftp! Can
someone please help with a working setup of
xdm/startx/wrapper/whatever?

TIA
