mod_probe and iptable_nat problems on new Redhat 7.3 install

Post by Robert Ma » Thu, 09 May 2002 02:13:07

I just installed a fresh Redhat 7.3 on my box and am attempting to use
iptable's nat features to create a home NAT.  Various how-to's all
indicate that I need to run `modprobe iptable_nat`, but when I do so, I
get the following errors:

  # modprobe iptable_nat
  /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o:
  init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
  /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: insmod
  /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o failed
  /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: insmod
  iptable_nat failed

I have absolutely no idea what these errors mean much less a clue about
how to fix this.

At first I assumed it was related to the drivers of one ethernet cards
I'm using.  However, I was able to get NAT running using ipchains so now
I'm even more puzzled.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Rob

Can you post the results of an lsmod ?
I have seen ip_chains compatibility module being loaded and blocking
the ip_tables one from loading. But not on fresh install. Hmmm.

Yup, when i had this problem, i just ran ntsysv, unchecked ipchains, checked
iptables, and rebooted.  Then all was fine.  That was for 7.2, but i'm
assuming it should work for 7.3 as well :)

Of course.  Issuing the lsmod command on my box yeilds:

# lsmod

Module                  Size  Used by    Not tainted
appletalk              24204  12  (autoclean)
autofs                 12164   0  (autoclean) (unused)
tulip                  43104   1
eepro100               20336   1
ipchains               43560   5
usb-uhci               24484   0  (unused)
usbcore                73152   1  [usb-uhci]
ext3                   67136   5
jbd                    49400   5  [ext3]
aic7xxx               124768   6
sd_mod                 12864  12
scsi_mod              108576   2  [aic7xxx sd_mod]

Does that help at all?

Cheers,
Rob

  ^^^^^^^^
Here is your problem. IPchains and IPtables are mutually exclusive.
You have to get rid of ipchains before you can do anything with
iptables.
The ipchains module is loaded at startup for the firewall; if you
disable it you should be in the clear for your further configuration.

1. Redhat 7.3 - how install new packages from the CD package?

I have Linux Redhat 7.3 and I want to install new packages.
I have inserted installation CD1 and started kpackage. The problem is that
this reads only the packages on this CD and not on the other Redhat CDs.

I have used SuSE Linux before. The configuration program YATS allows to
select packages
which are to be installed. Then it requests to insert the correct CD(s).

How can I achieve this using Redhat?

Thanks,
Torsten
