X Problems & Motherboards

Post by joe » Mon, 08 Oct 2001 18:54:11

I have recently built 2 computers. They are identical except for the
motherboards used. Both boards are of the "integrated" type, having the
Video, Networking and Modem functions implemented on board. One board
is the K7SEM and the other is the M810LMR. Both are used with an
identical 20 GB hard drive, both have the same brand of monitor and
both use a Duron 750,

I have installed RH 7.1 on both but have been able to get X working
only with the K7SEM.

When I run Xconfigurator on the M810LMR I get only so far into the
process when the program halts and there is a report of a segmentation
fault and a core dump.

It seems strange that this process works for the K7SEM and bombs with
the M810LRM. Both boards make use of the SiS 730 chip set so that is
not the problem.

I need to figure this out as X is needed on both machines.

Any help would be appreciated.

Joe

How far into the process do you get?  I know that autoprobing can cause
sysytem hangs sometimes, so if you're doing that you might rather enter
values manually.  Don't really know what else if the mobos are pretty much
the same.

X Problems & Motherboards

I have tried just about everything!

I have run Xconfigurator --expert! I still get the segmentation fault
error in the middle of entering data.

I have run XF86Setup. This one gave me a XF86Config file but startx
didn't like it. The log in /var wasn't much help.

I even copied the XF86Config file from one machine to the other. Still
no luck!

Does anyone have RH working on this motherboard?

Thanks for the reply.

Joe

X Problems & Motherboards

Hello.  I've done a little experimenting with this, and I believe the
problem may be with monitor probing.

If you experience problems with RH 7.1 with a machine that has SIS 630
video, please try installing the O/S but specify text mode for the
default boot mode.  Once the product is installed, run Xconfigurator
with the "--noddcprobe" option and configure X as you would like.

Thanks,

X Problems & Motherboards

Phil:

Thanks for the tip. It was just what I needed! the "--noddcprobe"
option coupled with "--expert" let Xconfigurator do its job without the
segmentation fault I was getting.

X now works!

Thanks again.
