/var/log/messages with size of 0 and no logs are written !?

Post by Matthias Wal » Fri, 04 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I am using SuSE 6.3.
At the moment there are no logs written to the /var/log/messages file.
The file has a size of 0 bytes. What have I done? What can I do to
switch logging in /var/log/messages on again?

Many Thanks!

ciao!

Couple of things you should check.  Run these

lsof|grep syslog
ps aux|grep syslog

If nothing turns up, your syslog is not running.  I'm not sure where
SuSE keeps it's rc scripts, but either /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d/init.d
should have a syslog in it.  Run that script as in

/etc/init.d/syslog start

If it IS started already and not logging, check your ipchains scripts
and make sure you're not blocking syslog from everywhere (do block it
from your external interface, but not from itself) and if that's not the
problem, look in /etc/syslog.conf and see where your logs are actually
going.

SuSE puts the rc scripts in /sbin/init.d,
and probably this would be called sysklogd or syslogd.

Thanks a lot.

With SuSE the command "rcsyslog" with option start/stop does
the job!!

I suspect this is a problem rotating your logs, and could be fixed by
restarting syslogd.

Find out it's process # using ps,
and then type kill -HUP <process#>

1. How large can /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog get ?

My /var/log/messages is now over 3 meg, and my syslog is 200+ k. I'm
very curious how far is this going to go ?
Is there a way to restrict their sizes ?

cheers,
Hong Siang.
