Hi,

I was wondering how I could close ports in Linux, e.g. that outsiders
cannot telnet or ftp my machine anymore.

Thanks!

Turn of all unused services in /etc/inetd.conf

To shutoff telnet, ftp or any other services completely.....

edit /etc/inetd.conf and comment out the services you don't want,
then restart inet.

To limit services to a select few, see the man page for hosts.allow
and hosts.deny. That way you can configure who is allowed to
use what service without disabling the service all together.

Unplug the network connection to your computer (including modem
lines).  I guarantee that outsiders will no longer be able to
telnet or ftp to your machine.

1. Shutting down ports

I read the excellent answers to the December 8, 2000 question of shutting
down ports.  I too have port 1024 open which is kdeinit.  I added "-udpPort
0" to the end of the "x:5:  etc "  in /etc/inittab and rebooted but the
port is still showing as open. Is this ok to have open?  Thanks for the
excellent answers,  it is hard to find information on this.
