font file missing? Help?

Post by Mike Jaco » Sun, 17 Apr 1994 03:29:36

Hi! I'm new to tex and I'm having some problems dvi'ing a file that I picked
up on the network. When I issue the command "dvihplj filename" the program
goes off in search of its fonts. This is all well and fine, but at a certain
point the program stops and issues the statement:

Warning 1205: font manfnt [d:\texfonts\pixel.lj\$rdpi\manfnt<300>] not found
new file:

I assume that the problem stems from me either not having the correct
path/variable statements in my config.sys or just not having installed the
package right.  I've rechecked the installation instructions and the
configuration statements that it suggests. Everything seems to be in order.

I've managed to print and view other dvi files, but the two files that I
really want to print are both giving me this error.

These are the settings in my config.sys:

path=.....;d:\emtex;....

set texinput=d:\emtex\texinput
set tfm=d:\emtex\tfm
set texfmt=d:\emtex\texfmts
set btexfmt=d:\emtex\btexfmts
set textfm=d:\emtex\tfm
set bibinput=d:\emtex\bibinput
set mfinput=d:\emtex\mfinput
set mfbas=d:\emtex\mfbases
set bmfbas=d:\emtex\bmfbases
set mfjob=d:\emtex\mfjob
set dvidrvinput=d:\emtex\doc
set dvidrvfonts=d:\texfonts
set dvidrvgraph=d:\emtex\doc\gr$r

I'm currently using OS/2 2.1 and Dviscr 1.4d.

Can someone suggest a solution? Could it be that I just don't have the fonts
that these documents require? If so, how would I generate them, or where would
I get them from?

PS: The files that I'm trying to print are Install-guide-2.0.dvi and
Sag-alpha-1.dvi. These are the installation and system administration manuals
for linux.

Actually, your installation is probably perfectly OK, despite what you
think.  The only problem that you have is that the font that you are
looking for is not currently in the correct format (if installed at all
on your system).

I assume that you have Metafont running since you have the appropriate
bits in your setup stuff (those that I've not deleted above).  If you
do, and Metafont will automatically be run from dviscr (I can't remember
if it is or not), then Metafont will look for the file manfnt.mf, and
from that create manfnt.300pk, or the appropriate sized bitmap file for
the font.  It's as simple (or as difficult depending upon your point of
view) as that.  You may find that the file is still printable, and that
instead of using the correct font it will substitute some other font.

If you don't have manfnt.mf you can look in the archives for it (try
pip.shsu.edu - it's the nearest CTAN archive to you), and if you dig
around you may even find a set of PK files that will do the job nicely,
meaning that you don't have to have Metafont running.

1. Help with dvips in MikTex: missing header file ma1r8a.pfb

Please help!

I have installed MikTeX 2.0 on a new computer. I have suddenly found that I
cannot use dvips to create a postscript file of my manuscript. I get the
following error:
" missing header file ma1r8a.pfb"

I had never had this before on the old computer. Can anyone please tell me
what it means?

Thanks, Glenn.
