Help: Virtual fonts for laserjet ???

Post by James Tiza » Wed, 28 Jun 1995 04:00:00

Hello TeXperts....

Does anyone know whether there is a dvi->laserjet driver that
uses virtual fonts properly -  like dvips does ?
I know the common  dvilj (the one that comes with Linux) is
supposed to work after running dvicopy, but even then it
still seems to want to run Metafont.

Or to put my question another way...

Can I use the resident laserjet fonts from plain TeX ?

Thanks in advance

Your question doesn't really have anything to do with virtual fonts.
Virtual fonts are simply fonts where the characters are represented by
dvi file commands.  dvips's native font support doesn't have anything
to do with its virtual font support (native font support predated virtual
font support, and was by a different author).  Virtual fonts make using
native fonts a little more convenient, that's all.

What you need to use the native fonts on the laserjet is a bunch of tfm
files, and a driver which knows about native fonts.  Norm Walsh put together
the tfm files, and Eberhart Mattes provided the driver.  It's my understanding
that Karl Berry modified dvilj to also use the native fonts (look for
dviljk at CTAN).  The tfm files are at CTAN, somewhere under the fonts
directory.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has put together a package for using
these fonts conveniently.

1. Virtual fonts a little *too* virtual... please help

It seems to me that LaTeX isn't using your virtual fonts,
presumably because you are not invoking a .sty file or .fd file
which calls them.
You could use dvitype (if you have it)
to see which fonts exactly LaTeX is using:

% dvitype myfile.dvi
