We are using teTex on a DEC 3600 Alpha - Digital UNIX V3.2C.  While
latexing a document and an error is reached, I typed "e" at the prompt.
I was brought right to the offending spot in my document but it was with
the vi editor.  I added "setenv TEXEDIT /usr/bin/emacs" to my .cshrc file.
Now when I type "e" it starts up emacs but not in the offending document.
It starts up with the *scratch* buffer.  Any ideas on what I need to do to
get this working "properly."  (Do I need to add anything to my .emacs
file?)

[Barry Tesman]

| I added "setenv TEXEDIT /usr/bin/emacs" to my .cshrc file.
| Now when I type "e" it starts up emacs but not in the offending document.
| It starts up with the *scratch* buffer.

        setenv TEXEDIT 'emacs +%d %s'

and Bob's your uncle.

Or get AUC TeX and run TeX from with Emacs instead og Emacs from
within TeX.

You should perhaps mention that he is to put
(server-start)
in his .emacs file as well.

Also, I have found it a good idea to do emacsclient-specific setenv's
in my .emacs file instead of .cshrc and consorts, like:
(server-start)
(setenv "EDITOR" "emacsclient")
(setenv "TEXEDIT" "emacsclient +%d %s")

or similar.  That way emacsclient is only used from processes within
Emacs, which I tend to find the most sensible thing to do.  In
particular, I need not be afraid of whether emacs is stopped currently
or not, or not running at all.
