1. Author id's and article.sty

I apologize for the lack of clarity in my first post.  Here's what I've done:

What I want if for the author's names to be superscripted with numerals, and
for the identifying material to appear at the bottom of the page.  What happens
is that symbols are superscripted on the author's names, and nothing appears
at the bottom of the page.
