ME Entry in newsfeeds for innd in Linux ARGH !!!!!

Post by Eric Webb » Sat, 18 Mar 1995 03:08:28

We are using innd with Linux and are having problems with
the newsfeeds file. (Already newsfeeds(5)).

We are trying to restrict what newsgroups we
PROCESS from our newsfeed (we cannot tell them
what to feed us because they are a Satellite
        based feed).

Here is our ME entry in our newsfeeds file:

        ME:!*,comp.os.linux*::

What we wanted to accomplish is restrict the
newsgroups that we PROCESS to ONLY the
comp.os.linux and all subs like comp.os.linux.misc
etc.  (Later we will want more like some alt etc,
but for now as a proof of concept we are keeping
        it simple)

What happens when we run rnews on all the inbound
feed bags, is it all sorts of new directories with articles
are created under /var/spool/news/  like rec, alt,
soc etc etc EVEN though our ME entry does not ask
for those ! We only wanted

Also under /var/spool/news/in.coming, many of the inbound
bags are converted to unknowna.???  What are these files
and why were they created ? In fact many of these are created.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated !

Read the newsfeeds(5) man page in the INN distribution.  Quoting from it:
"Unlike other news software, it [i.e., the ME entry] does not affect what
groups are received; that is done by the active(5) file."

Edit your active file so that it contains only the newsgroups that you want.
Once you've done that, only those groups will have articles created in them;
articles in other groups will be discarded (or put in "junk", if you've
configured INN to save unwanted articles in "junk").

See also the INN active(5) man page.

Probably the best way to do it is to change the fourth field of the active
file entry OF EACH UNWANTED NEWSGROUP to a 'j'.

From the man page:

The fourth field can contain one of the following flags:

          y           Local postings are allowed

n           No local postings are allowed, only remote ones

m           The group is moderated and all postings must be
                      approved

j           Articles in this group are not kept, but only
                      passed on

x           Articles cannot be posted to this newsgroup

=foo.bar    Articles are locally filed into the
                      ``foo.bar'' group
