With the IDE patch installed I get the following on bootup:
TOSHIBA MK2428FC (500MB IDE w/512KB Cache, MaxMult=16)
enabled 1-sector multiple mode

I get the following 'time' comparison when transferring 256 Megabytes:
multiple mode disabled:  145.54 system  3:36.34 elapsed  67% CPU
               enabled:  101.59 system  4:10.13 elapsed  40% CPU
I calculate:
percentage improvement:  43             -16              67

To me the 16% cost in speed for the other improvements is a good trade,
though I'm curious why it's that high.

The reason is simple, if you read more sectors per interrupt, less interrupts
are needs to read the equivalent amount of data. Because processor time is
used to process interrupts, with a higher sector per interrupt, you spend less
CPU time processing the amount of sectors.
