I wish to re-emphasise: the amount of RAM was not relevant to the test I did,
since the compiled code loaded in core took up much less than 1 MB.

My comment about the compile time was merely an aside.

I did some tests on our network. The linux box is a 486/66 with a
3c509 VL, running 1.0 (with cluster-patches). The remote machine is a
Sparcstation II on another LAN, connected with FDDI (4 hops). The file
used for testing was a core-file of 8634800 bytes (but only 296
blocks, so remote disc overhead should be small).

Fetching to /dev/null gave me 330 kB/s, to an IDE disc 245 kB/s and to
a SCSI disc 295 kB/s.

Similar numbers for a Decstation-5000/200 was 255 kB/s for /dev/null
and 230 kB/s for the internal disc (RZ57, is that SCSI?).

I tested Linux to Linux also: write to /dev/null achieved 380 kB/s
(lowest measurement 300kB/s), write to IDE achieved 370 kB/s (220
kB/s).

This test was performed at night, on a pretty quiet network.

Subject: ms macros?
Date: Fri, 22 Apr 1994 22:48:14 GMT

I just discovered that the gtroff package doesn't include the ms macro
package.  Is it really there hiding under another name?  If not, are
there any legal or technical reasons why I can't install the macros
from another system?

I have tons of ms-formatted text that I really don't want to translate
if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

: Thanks in advance.

Any ideas? Yes, DON'T! Allowing anyone to log in as root without a
password is a sure invitation for a disaster. If you trust this other
person enough to give them root access, then give them the password.
Any mechanism by which root access can be obtained without a password
is a potential hole through which an unauthorized person could gain
access to your machine.

Always be careful about who you permit root access onto your machine.
With root access, all of the normal security is effectively disabled.
The security is there as much to prevent accidents as anything else.
Unless this is someone you really know well, you may want to
reconsider root access and instead just give him/her a normal account.
It's your decision of course, but my recommendations are:
        1) Unless it's _really_ necessary, don't give anyone else root
           access.

        2) If you decide it is necessary, just give this other person
the root password. I cannot stress too strongly how risky
it is to allow root login without a password.

        Cheers,
        Bruce.

Subject: Strange login behavior
Date: Mon, 18 Apr 1994 16:28:51 -0800

I get the following strange behavior using Linux 1.0 straight
from the Slackware 1.2.0 distribution:

kzbn> whoami
gat                           <-- I start out as me
kzbn> login root              <-- I log in as root
Password:
Linux 1.0. (Posix).

koozbain:~$ whoami
gat                           <-- But I'm still me!
koozbain:~$ cd ~              <-- Or am I?
koozbain:~$ pwd               <-- My home directory is now /root!
/root
koozbain:~$ ls                <-- I guess I'm me after all
ls: .: Permission denied
koozbain:~$

This might have been a serious security risk for the unwary, except
that if you try this starting as root and logging in as a user it just
logs you out.  So as it stands it's not a serious problem, but I'm still
curious to know why it does this.

Thanks,
E.

for update or as another update process. What has to be in etc/rc ?
update & bdflush or should I only link update to bdflush and leave etc/rc.
Do I have to look for the kernel version before running bdflush ? (Sometimes

I had to install OS2-bootmanager to get my harddisk to boot again...
(Of course I deleted the os2-bootmanager afterwards with fdisk easily)

Several FDISK.EXE /mbr and format c: /S did not help.
Of course the bootflag was on the right partition in case you might ask.

Date: Tue, 19 Apr 1994 17:27:57 GMT

        Hello,

My Linux 1.0 kernel prints out the following error message:

eth0: unexpected interrupt 0x1
as well as
eth0: unexpected interrupt 0x40

Since this is the network card, I checked all my startup
and configuration files for errors, as well as the output from netstat
and ifconfig. No joy. This only started after I changed my ip_adress and
network I was attached to. Any clue would be appreciated,  e-mail prefferred.
I still have my object files for the kernel so I can recompile if necessary.

        Thanks a lot,

        Eduard

I just finished intalling Debian Linux and I'm having one major
problem... I can't load X. When I run startx or xinit, after a screen of
text I get the following error messages:

Fatal server error: Ther is no mode definition named "1024x768"

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unexpected signal 13

What's going on? The screen tries to load X but is unsuccessful. I need
to be able to load X in order to get around because I'm not very good
with Unix (yet) but I know X pretty well. Thanks in advance to anyone
who reads this message and can help me.

i would like to find a new version of syslogd.  the one i have is
5.27 and it freaks out periodically because of a bug.
i was told that there is a new one, but the only one i could find
was the sysklogd package, which incidentally does not compile for me.
it's syslogd fails to catch the bootup messages (probably because
klogd which wouldn't compile is supposed to get them).  if anyone
knows where to get a new version, please drop me a note or post.
thanks.

p.s.  my site, linuxftp.caltech.edu has a live mirror of Linus's
directory and some other stuff.  please try it out.

This isn't very accurate. It is trivial for anybody with root access
on that Ethernet subnet to hack root on your machine. A router will
stop other attempts (if you're talking about spoofing a hostname).

Regarding giving out the password: It doesn't really matter how you
become root on the machine - you can setup passwd and .rhosts to your
(the "cracker"'s) liking anyway.

However, many sysadmins keep the same root password on a class of
machines. Access through .rhosts is more restrictive without losing
that convenience, but it is difficult to set up your system so that
root@somehost can't crack root@server. Export filesystems with care!

I don't use the colorado tapes but DAT, so I maybe miss some important
details -- but why don't you write to your tape using tar ?
If you can write only binary images to the tape (and something you can
write, because you "make floppies from [this tape]") you can create one
huge tar file on your Sparc and copy it onto the tape.
Then -- as I suggested before -- extract the files to the non-root
partition and install from this partition (and not from the tape !).

I have a 14.4k modem and it can give me an exchange rate of
57,600bauds between the modem and the board when it runs using v42bis, MNP 5.
The problem is that the Slackware setup gives as a maximum speed for the
modem 38,400bauds and I saw some scripts for modem connection and
they all used 38,400. Is it possible to have the modem configured to
have a speed of 57.6kbauds? How do I do that? Someone did that and worked
fine? Thanks for the info.

Regards,

Jose Acacio.

PS. None of the FAQs I saw addressed this question. If there is a FAQ with
that, please tell me where to find it. Thanks again.

: 2) Why can't linux support 30 users, is it simply hardware?  Why isn't

Well, based on my real-world experience, I have to say that it will work
like a champ!  =)

We a student access Internet host here on the campus with five dialup lines
and access via a mess of lab machines.  We allow our users to run 'screen'
for multiple sessions.

The hardware is an ISA 486/66 with an old 8 port digiboard with 8250s (which
handle 16.8kbps pretty good, btw), 32 megs of ram, 64 megs or swap (which
only gets used when I run XV.. =), and 2 gigs of disk (only using 1 right
now)..

Our average usage is about 7-10 users, minimum is about 3 (early morning,
late night) and max usage is 16-20 users!!  For example, we have 7 sessions
running right now, and here is our memory utilization and cpu utilization:

             total       used       free     shared    buffers
Mem:         31168      29828       1340       8868      16728
Swap:        66556        940      65616

 12:37pm  up 22:58,  7 users,  load average: 0.06, 0.10, 0.08

Note the large amount of ram getting used for buffers..

Currently running are two copies of tin, one rn, and two people running irc.
During peak load conditions ...

Subject: Linux/SCSI/fdisk HELP!!
Date: 24 Apr 1994 17:03:44 -0500

I'm trying to install the Slackware dist. of Linux 1.0 on a new
484dx33 w/16 megs RAM, BusLogic 445s SCSI-2 vesa local-bus controller
(Firmware v3.37, BIOS v4.72, Rev. E) and a Microplois MC4110s 1.05 gig Hard
Drive (Rev. A7). I'm installing from a 3.5" floppy, after logining in as
root and running setup, i get:

"You have not yet dsignated any disk partitions as Linux native. "

I try to run fdisk /dev/sda, but i get: unable to open /dev/sda. I tried
/dev/sda../dev/sdg, but nothing works. Everything is at factory defaults,
except the micop. drive, which was changed to SCSI ID0 (the BusLogic Card
has SCSI ID7).

Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi,

I already got refused to re-install the 'a' disks.  Is there any problem
re-installing the rest of the distribution?  Assuming, of course, that I
first make backup copies of all the files I have customized.

Since I have a machine that is only used for testing, I'm waiting for the

Not that I think that my testing will have any practical use, but I'm

Well, my system manages _very_ easily with 8 users (load average only gets
to about 0.10).

Obviously, calculating how many users a system can support depends on what
the users want to do. With reading News, mailing, playing MUD, FTPing, I
think my system could cope with 25 users with CPU to spare.

This usually happens when your file it is looking for doesn't exist....all
you need to do is,

        touch /var/adm/lastlog

To create a 0 byte file for it to use.....that should do it!

Try
        /usr/lib/makewhatis -c /usr/man/preformat

This will tell the "makewhatis" to use the "cat" files rather than (usually
non-existent) "man" files, and to use the /usr/man/preformat directory. (in
some distributions, like SLACKWARE, for strange to me reasons, the cat files
are in there, instead of JUST /usr/man/cat* or /usr/local/man/cat*).

The script makewhatis is not quite complete, because
    1. it does not allow scanning through multiple directories,
        e.g. /usr/man+/usr/man/preformat/+/usr/local/man
    2. it does not look into the MANPATH env-variable for addresses

I think, the "2." should apply, so the generated whatis files will be
consistent with the possibility to read the manual.

And
    3. the current "makewhatis" does not do REAL update of the whatis file.
The "-u" flag generates a new whatis file from ... young man-pages.

As a remedy for now I see the following possibilities:
    A. correct the "makewhatis" temporarily. One possibility would be
to add the accumulation feature, by appending to the existing
        whatis (and sorting again), e.g.
Change the last lines of the makewhatis from
            sed '/^$/d' < /tmp/whatis$$ | sort | uniq > ${mandir}/whatis
            chmod 644 ${mandir}/whatis
            rm /tmp/whatis$$
    to
            cat ${mandir}/whatis >> /tmp/whatis$$
            sed '/^$/d' < /tmp/whatis$$ | sort | uniq > /tmp/whatis
            chmod 644 ${mandir}/whatis
            rm /tmp/whatis$$
or
     B. do small changes to /usr/man/whatis manually, adding your entries
        in alphabetical order

It should be

Hey!

I installed X11R5 installed on my Linux machine (0.99pl13).
There are several PEXlib-Files, but typing in "xdpyinfo | grep X3D-PEX".
implies no responds. Running a PEX-application cause an errror.
So I guess, that the PEX-lib extension for the XServer is missing.
Does Anybody know, how to get PEX working?

Regard

I think you are really missing something obvious, it's some swapspace.
We had the same problem here a few days ago on a machine with 8MByte ram.
After creating an 8MByte swapfile everything worked fine.
I hope this helps,

I've read in the news some times ago an article somebody saying there
were about 25 users simultaneously working on a 486/66 (i think), doing
things like editing, compiling etc. The writer seems to be most enthisiastic
about the ability of linux (pl 15 at that time) to handle all this
in a stable way. He said there were no slowdown of the system.

Sorry to be so vaguely, but i haven't found the article on my box.
It could have been 2 months ago that i've read the article.

Does anybody else remember this thread?

Novell Inc. is developing a low-cost, 32-bit multitasking operating

Novell is expected to demonstrate the software -- which it is developing
under tight security at an off-site warehouse -- to a few select users
at next week's NetWorld+Interop trade show, said sources close to the

In a version of Slackware's net disk, after setup has been completed
the file /etc/HOSTNAME reads

        hostname.domain

in rc.inet1 there is a line
 /bin/hostname `cat /etc/HOSTNAME`

and in rc.M

 /bin/domainname `cat /etc/HOSTNAME |cut -d2- .`   ! or something like that

when the mail program combines the two get

hostname.domain.domain

if you /etc/HOSTNAME file reads

hostname

then the mail programs gets     hostname.hostname

solution:

1)Edit rc.M  to read
 /bin/domainname domain
  and the etc/HOSTNAME to read
 hostname

2)Create a file /etc/DOMAIN containing
domain
and change rc.M to read
/bin/domainname `cat /etc/DOMAIN`
