Can I use shadow passwords with slackware?

I have Slackware 2.1 installed, and would like to set up the system with
shadow passwords.  Has anyone had success in doing this?  What docs,
software, etc. should I get to help me do this?

I get the following error message from Setting up Screensaver:

Your system uses shadow passwords.
Please contact your system administrator.
Tell him that you need suid for the kcheckpass program!
