Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01 HELP!

Post by Mike Coh » Thu, 18 Apr 2002 05:58:09

I had previosly installed Suse7.2 on this system and I was attempting
a re-install when this problem came up. This has happened in the past
and I would low level format the HD and then SuSE would install.

I have low level Formatted and still no dice.
I have now tried 3 different hard drives all IDE all different sizes
and
am on my second motherboard. All Are compatable with this version of
SUSE.

When the sytem boots off of the installation CD the install cant
continue because of this message.Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount
root fs on 08:01

This is a generic system with ide hard drives p2 and p3 processors
(depending on the board)  and 3com nics.
can someone give me some insight?

Try to change the ide cd (I'm assuming you are using an ide cd)... I ran
into the same problem with a broken cd reader while I was trying to
install SuSE 7.3.

Sounds about correct.  The root fs you're unable to mount at that
stage in the installation is the one on the CDROM drive, not the
one on the harddrive.  Either a damaged install media or a damaged
CDROM drive.

The mezz means that that the kernel is unable to mount any root filesystem.
Therefor, the thing you should do is to run liloconfig, or edit /etc/lilo.conf
manually, then just run "lilo". It should work, and then you can use your
 linux just like anyone else.
