flexfax setup/permissions

Post by Remco Treffko » Fri, 10 Sep 1993 23:24:51

I have flexfax patched and compiled. It kinda works. All of the problems
I can see so far seem to be related to permission problems. The install
scripts seem to be a bit messy, the makefiles did not work without further
tweaking. Who knows what I messed up.

My modem is recognized and installed as /dev/cua1. Most of the syslog info
points to permissions.

Does anybody have it up and running? Please send me a list of your permissions
and any information that you think is helpfull.

The flexfax doc is quite extensive, but has been useless so far. Did I miss
something important?

The version I am using:

flexfax-2.2beta5.tar.gz patched with flexfax-linux.tar.gz.
My kernel is pl12.

Any pointers?

The latest version is beta051.  The program's author is busily tidying up
loose ends, and the official release (in about a week) will compile out
of the box on linux - no install/makefile tweaking neccessary.  The kernel
requires a minor patch to make FIFO's work like they're supposed to, and
this is included - see port/linux/README.

1. FlexFax setup

Hi all,

I have a few queries in relation to setting up FlexFax. I am currently trying
to get v2.3beta036 working, although I also have v2.2 lying about. The follwing
is a bit about my setup:

Kernel 1.1.73
Slackware 2.0.1
Modem used for SLIP connection regularly

Firstly a query about the Makefile (after running configure linux). On trying
a make clean (the top-level Makefile converts this to make incclean for
subsequent levels), the directories are gone through, and the command make
incclean cannot be found (clean is found in lower-level directories, so I have
had to do a make clean in all directories singly). I think the top-level
Makefile complains if I edit it to not convert `clean` to `incclean`. Is there
any way to get this working right? (I assume it must work correctly for other
people!)

Secondly, following a complete make and installation of FlexFax, and prior to
using `faxaddmodem`, I notice a mention about the `faxd` "owning" the modem.
Thus, if I set it up by adding my modem, I will need to tell the modem to go
into data mode every time I want to carry out a SLIP connection. In the README,
it mentions that there is a way of changing this so that the modem stays in
data mode, and the fax daemon sets it to fax mode when it wants. The README
says that this can be setup in the config file, but says no more about it. I
have had a look at the /var/spool/fax/config/config.class2 (which I think my
modem is), but did not know what to do or where to edit!

As a result, I have got FlexFax compiled and installed but not setup, as I do
not want to lose my SLIP connection!

I would very much appreciate help with this - I cannot find any further mention
about configuring the modem to stay in data mode anywhere else in the docs.

Cheers

Ivan
