ntalk strangeness/Slack 1.1.2

I've run into another of those intractable-seeming problems that
always seem to wait a while before popping up.  A friend of mine
logged into my box from berkeley, a few hours ago, and tried to ntalk.
I recieved no notice of his attempt; the only traces the attempt left
were in /var/adm/messages :
Mar 14 00:22:28 fitch_95jrn in.ntalkd[3791]: connect from localhost
and in /var/adm/syslog :
Mar 14 00:22:29 fitch_95jrn talkd[3791]: recv: Connection refused
Trying to ntalk to myself between 2 Xterms works, but none of the
usual "ntalk: connection requested..." messages appear anywhere; it
only works when I know in advance.
Any pointers to what to change (I grepped for 'talk' through /etc and
/var/adm/packages with no success) to get talk to work would be
greatfully appreciated.

1. ntalk: talk: ntalk/udp: service is not registered

I know, this is a FAQ but I have followed the procedures and still get
the error "talk: ntalk/udp: service is not registered".

This is on an Ultra Sparc running Solaris 2.5

I compiled ntalk and ntalkd.  Inserted:

ntalk       518/udp

in /etc/services.  I added:

ntalk   dgram   udp wait    root    /usr/local/etc/in.ntalkd in.ntalkd

in /etc/inetd.conf.  Then I kill -HUP PID of inetd.  Type ntalk
<username> and get

talk: ntalk/udp: service is not registered.

Any help would be appreciated!
