talk won't talk

Post by Ross Boswe » Sun, 26 Jun 1994 18:14:53

On my system, talk returns the error:
[Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)]
when I attempt to invoke it.
Standalone system, Slackware v1.20, kernel 1.1.22

It may be a clue that telnet localhost 517 returns:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

talk and ntalk are both configured active in inetd.conf

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks -- Ross

I had a similar error with Slackware 1.1.1. There seems to be an error
in /etc/rc.d/rc.M. In the line:
        /bin/hostname <hostname>
<hostname> should be the complete name, not just the machine name. (i.e.
machine.host.net, not just machine)

That fixed it for me...

talk won't talk

There's nothing like answering your own question!

: On my system, talk returns the error:
: [Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)]
: when I attempt to invoke it.
: Standalone system, Slackware v1.20, kernel 1.1.22

The problem went away when I configured the "dummy" interface

: It may be a clue that telnet localhost 517 returns:
: Trying 127.0.0.1...
: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Obviously irrelevant, since this still returns the same result!

1. Slackware 1.1.2 talk(1) won't talk to Suns (explain talkd)

With Slackware 1.1.2, this seems to not work.  I cannot remember
if it used to work.

Apparently, talk for BSD 4.2/3 are not compatible.  I don't know
which the Suns have.

I get an error about some refused connection from daemon (111).
What's with the ntalkd and talkd?  They are links.  Does the file
behave differently when invoked differently?

Thanks.
