smail->transport smtp: connect: No route to host??

Post by mu.. » Tue, 24 May 1994 16:54:04

Hi linuxers, I have Smail3.1.28.1 from the latest slackware release in
my computer, which has kernel 1.0. I sometimes get the following
message in the smail log when sending mail to certain (not all)
internet hosts:
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(ERR_148) transport smtp: connect: No route to host
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
and yet can ping these hosts
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
PING tobit.saclay.cea.fr (132.166.52.8): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 132.166.52.8: icmp_seq=0 ttl=238 time=238.3 ms
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Another thing that disturbs me is that I can send mail to these
problematic  hosts from the host which is configured as my smart_host
(which I think proves that my computer doesn't pass the message to the
smart_host when realizing that he's unable to find the route)
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

Use a /usr/lib/smail/routers file to force smail to either respect MX
records in DNS or always use your smarthost.

I did an experiment and found that tobit.saclay.cea.fr is an RS/6000
that appears to be behind a filtered router (firewall?) that lets your
ping (or even telnet) packets through but blocks SMTP packets -
simulating a network outage. AFAIK smail only goes on to the next
alternative router if it cannot figure out how it *should* route a
mail using the first choice router. If it perceives a network outage
it will bounce and/or buffer the mail.

"tobit" does have an MX record in DNS though so if you use that you'd
be OK. So try the following router file:

bind: driver=bind,transport=smtp
smart_host: driver=smarthost

This will respect MX records. Alternatively use _just_ the second line
and send *everything* via your smarthost.

1. smail+term >> transport smtp: IP address for localhost not found

I am trying to get smail+mailx send my mail over a
term connection. Local mail works fine. For the term
connection I got the config files from

pub/Linux/apps/comm/term/term/extra/smail.conf.tar.Z

on sunsite.

When I try sending an internet mail, I get the following
error message in the log file:

transport smtp: IP address for localhost not found

I have the following,  one line /etc/hosts file:

-------------------------------------------------
127.0.0.1        localhost
-------------------------------------------------

Is there  a mail guru out there who can put together a
bare-bones, no frills smail+term package using smtp
port for mail-illiterates like me to use happily.

I think this would be very much appreciated by all the
Term -a truely great software that made me switch over
to Linux from dos- users.
