Ghostview needs the printer name from your /etc/printcap file (is 'lp' for
me) This is the same name you can use with lpr's -P option. And
Ghostview simply uses lpr to print the file.

No, it does not. It gives no other result than a "lpr postscriptfile".
The only thing that Ghostview does is to send only the selected pages
to the printer, if one ore more pages are selected.
There is a nice package (called "magic filter") which uses the "file" command
to detect the format of a file and converts the file if needed. I have
installed it and it works just fine. "lpr postscriptfile" calls
ghostscript, "lpr textfile" prints it directly.
