NIS/YP-like for Linux?

NIS/YP-like for Linux?

Greetings Linux Enthusiasts!

I have a friend that uses Linux as a teaching tool in his CIS department at
the University of Evansville. He recently sent me a question regarding
NIS/YP-like stuff for Linux which I could not answer as I have not
investigated this possibility yet in my Linux experience. Can anyone
provide us answers to this?

We are working on a few things that others might find interesting.  I
have a couple of students working on Linux stuff.  The most important for
us is getting a common /etc/password file.  Do you know of anything for
Linux that would be similar to NIS?  We'd have an easy and reasonably
reliable approach if batch mode ftp worked, but we haven't found a Linux
distribution that has a fully working ftp.  One student is looking into
that right now.

Thanks
