kde2.0.1 -> kde2.1beta2 (redhat7) couple of strange problems

Post by bass » Thu, 15 Feb 2001 17:50:46

I downloaded the new kde beta2 rpms from kde.org website. I took everything,
and when I started upgrading, I started from QT libraries. they complained
some dependency problems from each other. the new QT library could not go
over the old one because the old one was needed by another old qt library
(which I was going to upgrade next) .. well because I had all the new
libraries to go over the old ones, I decided to force the upgrading with
"--nodeps" and that did the trick.. then I installed the kde rpms and I got
KDE running.

BUT!  I encountered couple of quite strange bugs, and I don't know what I
can do about it.

1) other than "root" users lost their rights to start and access certain
programs and devices like /dev/modem, /usr/sbin/kppp and pppd and stuff like
that.. ok, I got the modem links and kppp work again (but why this happened
I wonder_???) but pppd does not seem to start. kppp dials alright now (as a
user mode) but it cannot start pppd.  what I missed?   as a root, kppp works
nicely.

2) themes are wrong. in 2.0.1 I used the default theme, default widgets,
where there is the blue nice looking (with those bumps) header in every
window, the close-button on the top left, others on top right corner.. and
the push buttons had a little gradient going there.. but now, those don't
work anymore. I have no borders (in a default-theme) whatsoever, where to
drag to resize, and the buttons don't have the nice gradient they used to
have, and the header in the windows, well it's blue, but the "texture" is
gone.. and on the top left corner of the window, I don't have the [x] button
anymore, instead, the old nailing and system-menu buttons are there.. and on
the right, the big (in my opinion ugly as well) old X and maximize-minimize
buttons that was seen in the old kde 1..
If I try different desktop themes, I can have so stupid bitmap
woodlike-borders and other stuff, the "elegant" seems to work also. but the
nicest one, which I used in the 2.0.1 is gone!  and the "default" really
seems to miss some important parts (well if you look in the theme-selector
advanced-tab where it shows what's in the theme-file, it shows, that there
is no icons, no backgrounds, no buttons no nothing..)

damn!

help me please what went wrong?
and where in the world is my thememanager - there is no edit button .. just
ADD  that creates empty theme  but that's it!!?????

thanks!

In general the use of "--nodeps" is like working without a net.

In any case, I would have suggested that in order to resolve the problems that
you use: "rpm  -i  --replacefiles".

I assume that you are now missing some dependency.

1. KDE1.9.2 -> KDE2.0.1 upgrade problems

I.ve been using SuSE 7.0 since it came out, and decided to upgrade KDE
to KDE2.0.1. Downloaded rpm's, including dependent lib's. 2.0.1 rpms
conflict with 1.9.2 files, so I force install. kdebase-2.0.2-3.rpm
produces:
"error: failed dependencies:
        icons is needed by kdebase-2.0.1-3"

Any idea what "icons" is needed?
I have KDE 1.0 and KDE1.9.2(2.0) installed, but it worked before
upgrade to 2.0.1.
