Disappearing Panels in RedHat 7.2

Disappearing Panels in RedHat 7.2

Post by wp » Mon, 08 Apr 2002 11:34:56

I recently installed Redhat 7.2 and KDE 2.2-10 (the version that comes with
Redhat).  Lately though, when I log in I do not get any panels along the
bottom of the screen.  There are the five or so default icons on the
desktop, but no panel on the bottom to launch the applications.

I tried renaming the .kde directory thinking it would recreate a working
one but the did not work.  I tried changing the location of the panel from
bottom to right as some newsgroups users suggested but that did not work.

Q:  How can I get KDE panels working ????

Have you set it to autohide? Try moving your mouse pointer to the bottom of
the screen. If the panel appears, right-click on it, click Preferences,
Hiding, then uncheck the "Enable automatic hide" option.

Has it been manually hidden? Is there a small grey square with an arrow to
the far left or right of where the panel should be? If so, click it and the
panel should come back.

Did you select the Marble style in the KDE Control Center? That has been
known to cause the panel (a.k.a. 'kicker') to disappear.

Try opening a console (right-click the desktop, click 'Run command', then
enter 'konsole') and entering 'kicker'. You might need to enter it a couple
of times.

I also had this problem.  Turning OFF anti-aliased fonts fixed it.

1. RedHat 7.2 control-panel?

In RedHat 4.x and 6.x I could activate or deactivate my eth0
connection through the Network part of the control-panel.  I just
installed RH 7.2, and the only tool I can find is called Network
Configuration. It has pretty much all the info that the previous
control-panel entry has, except for the activate/deactivate
capability.

Question: how do I activate/deactivate my eth0 manually in RH 7.2?
