KDE 2.1-beta1 doesn't save desktop settings

KDE 2.1-beta1 doesn't save desktop settings

Post by Dan Arma » Sat, 30 Dec 2000 23:12:12

On SuSE 7.0, XF86 4.0/nvidia modules, pretty std. setup otherwise.

I had KDE 2.0.1 installed from RPMs and it worked OK.

Than I installed the 2.1-beta1 RPMs. All my custom settings (desktop
background, Alt+F2 command history etc.) were lost. The custom settings of
other programs were maintained though.
The really bad thing is, the desktop stopped saving the new settings. If I
set a desktop background etc. - it is lost the next time I restart KDE. I
get a blank red screen background every time.
Other things work though - such as session restoring and the settings of
other programs. There are no error messages that I can find.

So what is wrong. Is the 2.1-beta1 supposed to be less stable? (I had two
or three random crashes as well).

Sounds like something in the rpm caused your problem.  I had 2.0
installed/uninstalled from slackware pkgs, then compiled 2.1 from tarballs:
All of my settings stayed the same. I think that your settings are saved in a
$HOME subdirectory (.kde).

Well, it says beta doesnt it , beta = far from stable or finished product

KDE 2.1-beta1 doesn't save desktop settings

I'm having this exact problem in 2.0.1.

I'm running SuSE 6.4.  I installed the RPM's from SuSE's ftp site.

KDE will not restore my desktop backgrounds nor other Panel settings upon
login.  Other programs seem to set and restore their settings just fine.  It
lost my Alt-F2 command history and desktop background settings after the
install of 2.0.1.  No error messages.  Well, actually, most of the time when
I try to set a desktop background, I get one of those nice KDE bombs when I
close the control panel -- but no apparent ill effects.  But I was having
*this* problem under KDE 2.0.

I noticed in this newsgroup that at least one other user is having the same
problem under KDE 2.0.1.  (Message: KDE2 Help, dated 12/30)

2.1beta1 is obviously beta software, however, it's been more stable for me
than any of the previous KDE releases.  I'm running RedHat 7.0 and always
compile from tarballs....

1. .kdelnk file (KDE 1.*) doesn't work in KDE 2.1

Using KDE 2.1 installed from source on a Red Hat 6.0 machine.

I've migrated my old kde 1.* .kdelnk application files to my
.kde2/share/applnk directory, and most work fine (either from the
K-start menu, or when dragged onto kicker and started from there).
The exception is my file for Word Perfect 8, which never launches the
command.

The file is set to execute `/opt/wp8/wpbin/xwp', which is the path to
the executable.  Issuing this command from a terminal, or from a `run
command' window (alt-f2) works, as does making a short cut on the
desktop (dragging the icon for this file onto the desktop and
selecting `link').

Here are the contents of wp8.kdelnk file:

Anyone know what's up?
